Winifred Maddock (born Winifred Ryle, 1897 – 1987) was a pioneering British architect. She was one of the very first women to study at the Architectural Association School of Architecture. Winifred also wrote an important article called Women as Architects, which was published in the Architectural Association Journal. This helped open doors for more women in architecture.

Early Life and Education

Winifred Ryle was born on 3 February 1897 in Monken Hadley, England. Her family moved to Brighton that same year. Her father, Dr. Reginald John Ryle, was a doctor. Her mother, Catherine Scott, was a suffragette, which means she worked for women's right to vote. Winifred was the seventh of their ten children.

Winifred was taught at home until she was seven years old. After that, she went to Brighton and Hove High School. Later, she studied art at the Brighton School of Art.

Becoming an Architect

Winifred had famous great-uncles who were architects: George Gilbert Scott and George Frederick Bodley. This family connection might have inspired her. In 1917, the Architectural Association School of Architecture started allowing women to study there. Winifred and her cousin, Elisabeth Scott, were among the first four women to join the school.

Paving the Way for Women

The next year, in 1918, Winifred Ryle and another student named Ruth Lowy wrote an important article. It was called Women as Architects and appeared in the Architectural Association Journal. This article helped encourage more women to become architects.

By 1920, Winifred was so skilled that she was paid to teach classes at the School of Architecture. In 1922, she became one of the first women to be a full member of the Architectural Association. This was a big step for women in the field.

Family and Career

On 26 February 1924, Winifred married Richard Henry Maddock. He was also an architect. Together, they started their own architectural firm. They designed buildings in places like Sutton, Surrey, and Pangbourne, Berkshire.

Winifred was also an active member of the Quakers in Sutton. The Quakers are a religious group known for their peaceful beliefs and community work.
