Many hotels have stood on this spot since 1850. Before the Winter Inn, there were hotels like the Rossman House and the Merritt House. There was also the Webster House, which later became the Northern Hotel.

The Northern Hotel burned down in 1900. Its owner, Thomas B. Winter, then built the current Winter Inn. Construction happened between 1901 and 1902. He added a dance hall wing to the back in 1902-1903.

The Winter Inn served as a small, local hotel for many years. It had different owners over time. In 1978, the inn had a fire. After the fire, the building was carefully fixed up. It was made to look like it did in 1902. The Winter Inn reopened its doors in 1980.

What the Winter Inn Looks Like

The Winter Inn is a three-story building. It is shaped like the letter "L" and made of red bricks. It has a flat roof. The building's style is called Late Victorian Vernacular. This means it has some features from the late Victorian era. It also has a simple, practical design.

Most of the building is plain. The outside decorations are simple. There are brownstone bands above the windows on the second and third floors. These bands are called beltcourses. There is also a metal-bracketed cornice at the top. A cornice is a decorative molding along the top of a building.

Most windows are simple, with one pane of glass on top and one on the bottom. They are not placed in a perfectly even way. On the first floor, there are three special arched windows. These windows have three parts and pretty leaded glass designs above them. The main entrance has double doors. It is located at a slanted corner of the building.
