The Story of Winter Place
Winter Place was built over several decades, starting in the 1850s. The first part, called the North House, was built in the 1850s. It was the home of the Joseph S. Winter family. This house was designed in the Italianate style, which was popular at the time.
Later, in the 1870s, the South House was added. This house was for Joseph Winter's daughter, Sally Gindrat Winter Thorington, and her husband, Robert D. Thorington. The South House was built in the Second Empire style.
Architectural experts believe that Samuel Sloan designed Winter Place. He also designed Joseph Winter's first home in Montgomery in 1851.
Saving a Historic Treasure
For many years, Winter Place was not well cared for. It started to fall into disrepair. Because of this, the Alabama Historical Commission added it to their "Places in Peril" list in 2004. This list helps identify important buildings that need to be saved.
In 2006, a person named Craig Drescher bought the property. He tried to fix up the buildings and make them stable again.
Winter Place was officially recognized as an important historical site. It was added to the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage on September 29, 2005. Then, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 31, 2006. This means it is considered a very important part of American history.
A New Chapter for Winter Place
In 2018, the homes were sold to Benjamin Blanchard. He is a real estate investor who also helps good causes. He saw fixing up Winter Place as a way to bring back its historical beauty. He also wanted to help the Five Points neighborhood, where Winter Place is located, become a more unified community.
After many years of neglect, Mr. Blanchard successfully renovated the South House. It became his personal home in the fall of 2020. He plans to renovate the North House in the coming years. This project is helping to restore an important part of Montgomery's history.
