Wintersville, Missouri facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Wintersville is a small, unincorporated community located in the western part of Sullivan County, in the U.S. state of Missouri. An unincorporated community is a place that doesn't have its own local government, like a city or town does. Instead, it's usually part of a larger county.

You can find Wintersville along Missouri Route WW. It's about 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) southeast of a town called Harris. The community is also located just one mile (1.6 kilometers) east of Medicine Creek.

History of Wintersville

Wintersville has an interesting past. The community was first platted in 1857 by a person named J. N. Winters. When a place is "platted," it means someone has officially planned out its streets, blocks, and lots on a map. This is how the community got its name, in honor of J. N. Winters.

In the same year, 1857, a post office opened in Wintersville. This post office was an important place for people to send and receive mail. It stayed open for many years, helping the community connect with the outside world, until it finally closed its doors in 1904.
