Wizard's Hall is a fantasy novel written by Jane Yolen in 1991. Many readers have noticed that this book has several things in common with the famous Harry Potter series. The Harry Potter books started coming out six years after Wizard's Hall. However, Jane Yolen believes that any similarities are just a coincidence.
Meet Thornmallow: A Young Wizard's Journey
The story begins with a shy boy named Henry. His mother sends him to a special school called Wizard's Hall. This is a place where young people train to become powerful wizards.
Henry's New Name and Early Challenges
When Henry arrives at the Hall, he gets a new name: Thornmallow. This name suggests he might seem a bit tough or "prickly" on the outside, but he's actually soft and gentle inside.
Thornmallow quickly stands out, but not always in a good way! He accidentally covers a classroom in snow. He also shouts during an important welcome speech. These and other embarrassing moments make him feel very awkward.
Facing a Big Threat: The Evil Nettle
Soon, Thornmallow learns something huge. He is one of 113 students chosen for a very important mission. All these students are being prepared to face a dangerous enemy. Their task is to confront an evil wizard named Nettle and his enormous Beast.
Thornmallow feels worried and unsure. He wonders if he is brave enough or strong enough to help with such a big challenge. He doubts if he can truly become the wizard everyone needs him to be.
