The Wollaston Unitarian Church is a very old and special building in Quincy, Massachusetts. It was built way back in 1888. This church is a great example of a building style called Shingle Style. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. This means it's an important historical place in the United States. Today, the building is no longer a church. It has been changed into homes.

A Look at the Building's Design

This church building is found at the corner of Beale and Farrington Streets in Quincy. It shows off the Shingle Style very well. This style often has a look that seems to stretch out horizontally. It also has parts that are not perfectly balanced.

Building Materials and Features

The bottom part of the church is made of strong granite stone. The upper parts are covered with wooden shingles. These shingles look a bit like fish scales. At the corner of the building, there is a short, square tower. This tower has a roof shaped like a pyramid. The main door is tucked away at the bottom of this tower.

The front of the building, which faces the street, has a large arch. This arch is shaped like a Gothic window. Inside this arch, there is a beautiful stained glass window. Next to the main church, there is another part called the parish house. This was built in 1915 and is connected to the main church building.

History of the Church and Its Congregations

The Wollaston Unitarian Church was built in 1888. A group of Unitarian people had started their church just one year before. This church was the third one built in the Wollaston area in only 20 years. This shows how much the area was growing back then.

Changes Over the Years

In 1960, the Wollaston Church joined with another church. It became part of the United First Parish Church in Quincy. After that, a new group bought the building. This was St. Catherine's, a Greek Orthodox church. They bought it for $40,000. St. Catherine's had started their church in 1958.

The St. Catherine's church grew bigger over time. In 2004, the people of St. Catherine's moved to a brand new building. Their new church was in a town called Braintree. The old church building on Beale Street then became homes.
