The Show's Journey on TV
Starting Out in 1955
Connie Bea Hope started working at WKRG-TV when it first opened in September 1955. She began by hosting a show called Connie's Cupboard with Bea Hope. Estella Payton (1904–1999) was her helpful assistant.
Estella Payton's Role
In the early years, Estella Payton, who was an African American woman, mostly worked behind the scenes. She would set up things for the show. Sometimes, her hands would accidentally appear on camera. But in the 1960s, things changed! Estella began to appear on the show more often. She even got her own microphone. She was listed as the third main person in the show's opening credits. She also shared her thoughts during Connie's demonstrations. This was a big step forward for the show.
Friendly Competition and Fame
Woman's World aired at the same time as another local show. This show was called Gulf Coast Today on WALA-TV. It was hosted by Dot Moore. Woman's World was very well-liked. The Mobile Chamber of Commerce celebrated WKRG's 50th anniversary. They listed Woman's World as one of the TV station's favorite early shows. Famous people like Michael Landon even appeared as guests on the program.
A Step Forward for Mobile
