The Wood–Hughes House is a really old and special home located in Brenham, Texas. It was built way back in 1897. This house is a great example of a style called Late Victorian architecture.

The first owners were W. A. and Fannie Wood. They made sure to use super good wood and siding that looked like stone. Later, in 1913, a farmer and rancher named Henry W. Hughes bought the house. It even looks a bit like another famous house in Brenham, the F. W. Schuerenberg House.

What Makes This House Special?

The Wood–Hughes House is important because it shows off a cool building style from the late 1800s. It was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places on March 29, 1990. This means it's a place that the United States government wants to protect because of its history and unique design.

A Look at Its Style

The house is a mix of Stick and Eastlake styles. These are both types of Victorian architecture, which was popular when Queen Victoria ruled England.

  • Stick Style: Imagine a house that looks like it has sticks glued onto it. That's kind of what Stick style is! It uses wooden boards, often placed vertically, horizontally, or diagonally, to show off the building's frame. It makes the house look like it has a cool pattern on the outside.
  • Eastlake Style: This style is all about fancy, detailed wood carvings. Think of porches with lots of turned spindles, decorative brackets, and carved panels. It adds a lot of charm and decoration to the house.

So, the Wood–Hughes House has both the interesting patterns of Stick style and the beautiful wooden decorations of Eastlake style. This makes it a unique and pretty building to see in Brenham.
