A Look Back: The Church's Story
The church's story began in 1860. Back then, the group of people who worshipped there was called the Lafayette Street Baptist Church.
In 1886, the church bought the land where the Woodward Avenue Baptist Church would stand. They also changed their name to Woodward Avenue Baptist Church.
They hired an architect named Mortimer Smith to design their new church. Construction started right away. The beautiful church building was finished in 1887.
Changes Over Time
The church building changed a bit over the years. In 1934, the front part of the church had to be taken down. This was done to make space for widening Woodward Avenue, a big street in Detroit.
Later, in 1980, the church group sold the building. A new group, the United House of Jeremiah, bought it.
The Fire and End of an Era
Unfortunately, in 1986, a fire broke out. The fire completely destroyed the church building. This was a sad end for a historic Detroit landmark.
What the Church Looked Like
The Woodward Avenue Baptist Church was built in a style called Late Victorian Gothic. It was made from gray limestone. The stones had a rough, natural look.
When it was first built, the church had a pointed roof at the front. It also had a tall tower on one corner.
After the street was widened in 1935, about 46 feet were cut off the front. The church then measured 120 feet long and 90 feet wide. It had two simple, arched doors on each side of a slightly sticking-out section. There was also a two-story addition at the back of the church. This part was 165 feet long and 95 feet wide.
