Worthington, Louisville facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Worthington is a neighborhood located in Louisville, Kentucky. You can find it along Brownsboro Road and Ballardsville Road. It's a part of Louisville that has changed a lot over the years, growing from farmland into a busy community with homes, shops, and hospitals.

Worthington's History

Worthington has a long and interesting past. Back in the 1870s, there was a special gate on Brownsboro Road. This was a toll gate, where people had to pay a small fee to use the road. It was located right where Brownsboro Road met Ballardsville Road.

In the early 1900s, Worthington was mostly covered in potato farms. Farmers grew lots of potatoes there! But things started to change in the 1940s. More and more homes began to be built. This growth really sped up in the late 1960s. That's when big roads called Interstates were opened, like I-71 and I-265. These highways made it much easier for people to travel and live in Worthington while still working in other parts of Louisville.

Even with all the new buildings, you can still see parts of Worthington's past. The Worthington Cemetery, located at Brownsboro Road and Chamberlain Lane, reminds everyone of the area's farming history.

Growing and Changing

Worthington has seen a lot of new development recently. One big project is called Norton Commons. This is a large area, about 595 acres (or 2.4 square kilometers), where new homes, shops, and parks are being built. It's designed to be a place where people can live, work, and play all in one community.

Norton Commons is being built on what used to be the WAVE farm. This farm was owned by George Norton, who started the WAVE television station in Louisville.

New Places to Explore

Near the I-265 and Brownsboro Road interchange (where the highways meet), a large shopping center has been built. Here, you can find popular stores like Costco, Cabela's, and Lowe's.

Also in this area, Norton Healthcare has built a major hospital campus. They opened a general hospital in 2009. Later, they added a children's hospital and a cancer hospital, providing important medical care for the community.
