Xavier Chamorro Cardenal (born December 31, 1932 – died January 4, 2008) was an important journalist from Nicaragua. He started his career at his father's newspaper, called La Prensa. Later, in 1980, he helped start a new newspaper, El Nuevo Diario, and became its first editor and publisher.

His Early Life
Xavier Chamorro Cardenal was born in Granada, Nicaragua. His parents were Pedro Joaquín Chamorro Zelaya and Margarita Cardenal Argüello. His family was well-known in Nicaragua. For example, his great-grandfather, Pedro Joaquín Chamorro Alfaro, was once the President of Nicaragua.
Xavier had two brothers, Jaime and Pedro Joaquín. He also had two sisters, Ligia and Ana María. His family had a strong connection to newspapers.
His Journalism Career
Before 1980, Xavier Chamorro Cardenal worked for La Prensa. This newspaper was known for sharing a conservative point of view. It often published articles that criticized the government.
In 1978, his brother, Pedro Joaquín, who was the editor of La Prensa, was sadly killed. After this, Xavier took over as the newspaper's editor.
In 1980, Xavier decided to leave La Prensa. A large part of the newspaper's staff, about 80%, left with him. They wanted to support a different political group called the Sandinistas. Together, they started a new newspaper called El Nuevo Diario. Xavier Chamorro Cardenal became its director and editor. This new paper offered a different political view compared to La Prensa. El Nuevo Diario continued to be published for many years, but it closed down in 2019.
His Family Life
Xavier Chamorro Cardenal was married to Sonia García Cordova. They had five children together: Francisco Xavier, Margarita, Gabriel, Ana María, and Juan Sebastián.
Besides his work as a journalist, Xavier was also a professional engineer. He enjoyed being an amateur radio operator as a hobby.
Xavier Chamorro Cardenal passed away in Managua on January 4, 2008. He was 75 years old.
