Xavier Margairaz's Club Career
Xavier Margairaz was born in Rances. He started his professional football journey with clubs like FC Lausanne-Sport and Neuchâtel Xamax.
Playing for FC Zürich
Margairaz became a key player for Fussballclub Zürich. He helped them win the Swiss Super League, which is Switzerland's top football league, in the 2005–06 and 2006–07 seasons. This was a big achievement for the team.
Move to Spain and Injury
In May 2007, Margairaz signed a three-year contract with a Spanish team called CA Osasuna. While playing there, he faced a serious knee injury during a friendly match in February 2008. This injury meant he had to miss the UEFA Euro 2008 tournament. His recovery took many months.
Return to FC Zürich
After his time in Spain, Margairaz returned to FC Zürich. He first joined them on loan in January 2009. He helped the team win another league title that season. Because of his good performance, his move back to FC Zürich became permanent in June 2009.
On September 15, 2009, Margairaz made history for FC Zürich. He scored the club's first-ever goal in the UEFA Champions League. This happened during a group stage match against Real Madrid. Later, in January 2012, he moved to FC Sion and played there until June 2013. He also played for Servette FC and finished his career back at FC Lausanne-Sport.
International Games for Switzerland
Xavier Margairaz also played for the Swiss national team. He joined the team in 2005. He was chosen to be part of the squad for the 2006 FIFA World Cup. During this major tournament, he played in two matches as a substitute, coming on later in the game.
