Early Years and Success in Switzerland
Xavier Margairaz started his football journey in Rances, Switzerland. He began his professional career playing for teams like FC Lausanne-Sport and Neuchâtel Xamax. Later, he joined FC Zürich, where he helped them win the Swiss Super League championship two times in a row. These victories happened during the 2005–06 and 2006–07 seasons.
Playing in Spain and Returning Home
In May 2007, Margairaz signed a three-year contract with a Spanish team called CA Osasuna. While playing in Spain, he faced challenges getting regular playing time. In February 2008, he had a serious knee injury during a friendly match. This injury meant he could not play for at least eight months. He also missed the UEFA Euro 2008 tournament because of it.
On January 14, 2009, Margairaz returned to FC Zürich on a loan until the end of the season. He helped the team win another league title. In June 2009, his move back to FC Zürich became permanent.
Champions League Goal and Later Career
On September 15, 2009, Margairaz made history for FC Zürich. He scored the team's first-ever goal in the UEFA Champions League. This goal happened during a group stage match against Real Madrid. In January 2012, he moved to FC Sion and played there for about a year and a half. He left the club in June 2013.
