Ya'akov Yosef was an important Israeli rabbi and politician. He was born on October 18, 1946, and passed away on April 12, 2013. He was a member of the Israeli parliament, called the Knesset, representing the Shas party from 1984 to 1988.

Early Life of Ya'akov Yosef

Growing Up in Jerusalem

Ya'akov Yosef was born in Jerusalem. This was during a time called the "Mandate era," before Israel became an independent country. He was the second child and oldest son of Ovadia Yosef, who was a very famous rabbi.

Ya'akov went to special religious schools called yeshivas. He studied at the Porat Yosef and Kol Torah yeshivas in a neighborhood called Bayit VeGan. Later, he became a certified rabbi after studying at the Rav Kook Institute.

Political and Religious Career

Joining the Shas Party

In the early 1980s, Ya'akov Yosef became a member of the new Shas political party. His father helped start this party. Ya'akov represented Shas on the Jerusalem city council from 1983 to 1984.

Serving in the Knesset

In 1984, he was elected to the Knesset, which is Israel's parliament. While in the Knesset, he worked on several important committees. These included the Constitution, Law and Justice Committee, the Education and Culture Committee, and a special committee looking into traffic accidents. He served in the Knesset until the 1988 elections, when he lost his seat.

Later in his life, his views sometimes differed from his father's. For example, in 2004, his father disagreed with one of Ya'akov's religious rulings. Ya'akov had said that soldiers should not eat food provided by the army, but his father said this was wrong.

Leading a Yeshiva

Ya'akov Yosef was also the head of the Hazon Ya'akov yeshiva, which was named after his grandfather. He also served as the rabbi for the Givat Moshe neighborhood in Jerusalem. His brother, Avraham Yosef, was the chief rabbi of Holon.

His Son's Activities

His son, Yonatan Yosef, is also a well-known rabbi in Jerusalem. Yonatan is a spokesperson for Jewish residents in Sheikh Jarrah and works to promote Jewish presence in East Jerusalem. In 2013, Yonatan ran for a seat on the Jerusalem City Council.

Illness and Passing

Ya'akov Yosef passed away on April 12, 2013, at the age of 66. He died in Jerusalem's Hadassah Ein Kerem hospital, about a year after being diagnosed with cancer. He was buried in the Har HaMenuchot cemetery.
