Yahya al-Mu`tasim: A Ruler's Story
His Time as Caliph
Yahya al-Mu`tasim became a caliph in 1227. This happened after his uncle, Abdallah al-Adil, passed away. Important leaders in the city of Marrakesh supported Yahya. They wanted him to be the next ruler.
However, his time as caliph was short. Just two years later, in 1229, another relative challenged him. This was his other uncle, Idris al-Ma'mun. Idris took over the leadership from Yahya.
The Fight for Power
After Idris al-Ma'mun died in 1232, Yahya tried to become caliph again. But his cousin, Abd al-Wahid II, was chosen instead. Even though he wasn't the main caliph, Yahya still managed to control Marrakesh. He ruled this important city until he died in 1236.
After Yahya's death, the Almohad lands were finally united again. They were all under the rule of Abd al-Wahid II.
