Abu al-Ala Idris al-Ma'mun (Arabic: أبو العلا المأمون إدريس بن المنصور; Abū Al-`lā Al-Mā'mūn Idrīs ibn Al-Manṣūr) was a ruler of the Almohad Caliphate. He was a caliph, which means a leader, for part of the empire from 1229 until he died in October 1232.

Idris al-Ma'mun was the son of Abu Yusuf Yaqub al-Mansur. He was also the brother of Muhammad al-Nasir and Abdallah al-Adil.

Idris's Rise to Power

When his brother Abdallah died, a conflict started over who would rule next. Idris had a nephew named Yahya, who was supported by the capital city, Marrakesh.

Idris asked Ferdinand III of Castile, a king from Spain, for help. Ferdinand III sent 12,000 knights to assist Idris. With this help, Idris was able to take control of Marrakesh. He also dealt with the leaders who had supported Yahya.

Changes in Beliefs and Alliances

Idris made a big change in the official beliefs of the Almohad empire. The Almohads traditionally followed the teachings of Ibn Tumart, who they believed was the Mahdi (a special spiritual leader). Idris, however, decided to follow the Sunni branch of Islam instead.

He even said that Jesus was the Mahdi, not Ibn Tumart. This was a very different idea for the Almohad people. Because of this change, the Hafsid dynasty in the Ifriqiya province (modern-day Tunisia) decided to break away from the Almohad empire.

After winning control of Marrakesh, Idris kept his promise to Ferdinand III. In 1230, he allowed a Christian church to be built in Marrakesh. However, just two years later, Yahya's supporters destroyed this church.

Losing Support and Death

Idris's changing alliances and religious views made him lose the trust of many people. In early 1232, while Idris was trying to take control of Ceuta, Yahya saw his chance. Yahya managed to capture Marrakesh again.

Idris died while he was marching back to Marrakesh to fight Yahya. After his death, his son Abd al-Wahid II became the new ruler. Idris also had another son named Abu al-Hasan as-Said al-Mutadid.
