Abu al-Hasan as-Said al-Mutadid was an Almohad ruler, also known as a caliph. He led the Almohad Empire from 1242 until he died in 1248. He was the son of Idris al-Ma'mun, another Almohad leader.
Life as an Almohad Caliph
Abu al-Hasan as-Said al-Mutadid became caliph after his brother, Abd al-Wahid II. At this time, the Almohad Empire was much smaller. It only controlled parts of what is now Morocco.
During his time as caliph, Abu al-Hasan as-Said tried to win back important cities. He aimed to take Meknes from the Marinids. He also wanted to reclaim Tlemcen from the Zayyanids. These were other groups who were challenging the Almohad power.
As-Said managed to get some help from the Marinids, who briefly agreed to support him. However, he was later killed by the Zayyanids in a battle near Oujda in 1248. After his death, the Marinids took advantage of the situation. They conquered Fes, which further reduced the Almohad Empire's control. The Almohads were then mostly left with the area around Marrakesh.
