Abū Ḥafṣ ‘Umar al-Murtaḍā (Arabic: أبو حفص عمر المرتضى بن أبي إبراهيم اسحاق بن يوسف بن عبد المؤمن; died 1266) was a ruler known as a caliph in the Almohad Caliphate. He ruled over parts of what is now Morocco from 1248 until he passed away.

Life as Caliph
When Abū Ḥafṣ ‘Umar al-Murtaḍā became caliph, the Almohad empire was getting smaller. The land they controlled in Morocco was mostly just the area around the city of Marrakesh.
He had to pay money, called a tribute, to another powerful group called the Marinids. This showed that the Marinids were stronger than the Almohads at that time.
Later, his cousin, Abu al-Ula al-Wathiq Idris, took over his rule. His cousin got help from the Marinid ruler, Abu Yusuf Yaqub ibn Abd Al-Haqq. After taking power, Idris II declared himself the new caliph.
Abū Ḥafṣ ‘Umar al-Murtaḍā was very interested in writing and books. He especially liked the Maghrebi script, which is a style of Arabic writing. He started the first public center for copying manuscripts. This center was located in the madrasa (a type of school) at his mosque in Marrakesh.
