The Yakima Indian Agency Building is a special old building in Toppenish, Washington. It's also known as the Mary L. Goodrich Library and the Toppenish Historical Museum. This building has had many different jobs over the years! It was first built in 1921 to help connect the government with the Yakama Nation.

A Building with Many Lives

The Yakima Indian Agency Building was first built in 1921. It started as a one-story building. In 1931, a second story was added to it. A designer named John W. Maloney from Yakima created the building's look. He used a style called Classical Revival.

The building was made for the federal Indian Bureau. This group worked with the Yakama Nation. The building helped them communicate and work together.

From Government to School to Museum

By 1946, the Indian Bureau no longer used the building. It was sold to the local school district in 1949. For a few years, it was used as a junior high school. This lasted until 1954.

In 1954, the building became a library. Later, in 1976, a museum was added inside. This museum shares the history of the local area.

What the Building Looks Like

The Yakima Indian Agency is a two-story building made of brick. It is about 45 feet (14 meters) wide at the front and back. It is about 66 feet (20 meters) long on its sides. A small section sticks out from the back of the building.

The building has special brick designs on its corners. The main entrance has a small porch with columns. You walk up a flight of stairs to reach it. The windows on the front and sides open in the middle. The windows on the first floor have arched tops with stone details. The building sits on a raised concrete basement.

Inside the Building

On the first floor, there is an entry hall. Large rooms are on either side of this hall. These rooms are now used for the library. A staircase goes from the entry hall to the second floor. Up on the second floor, six rooms hold the museum exhibits.

The Yakima Indian Agency Building is important because of its history. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 19, 1988. This means it is a special place that should be protected.
