Yance Ford is an American film director and producer. He is known for making powerful documentary films. In 2019, he received a special award called a Guggenheim Fellowship.

Yance Ford's Early Life and Career
Yance Ford studied at Hamilton College. He graduated from there in 1994.
After college, he worked for PBS for ten years. PBS is a public broadcasting service that creates many educational shows. He was a producer for different series there, helping to create the programs.
In 2017, he was recognized on The Root 100 list. This list highlights influential African Americans between the ages of 25 and 45.
Making Films: Strong Island and Other Projects
Strong Island: A Personal Story
In 2018, Yance Ford made a documentary film called Strong Island. He worked on this film with Joslyn Barnes. The film tells the story of his brother, William Ford, who passed away in 1992.
Strong Island was a very important film. It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. This made Yance Ford the first openly transgender man to be nominated for any Academy Award.
Later in 2018, Ford and Barnes won an Emmy Award for Strong Island. This Emmy was for Exceptional Merit in Documentary Filmmaking. This made him the first openly transgender man and the first Black openly transgender person to win an Emmy.
Other Creative Works
Yance Ford has also received other important awards. These include a Creative Capital Award and a Sundance Documentary Film Program Fellowship. These awards help filmmakers create new projects.
In 2020, Ford directed an episode of a documentary series called Trial By Media. The episode was titled "Blago!" and was about the legal issues of a governor named Rod Blagojevich.
In 2024, Yance Ford released another documentary film. This film is called Power. It is a Netflix original film and was shown at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival.
