Yaphett El-Amin was born on March 30, 1971. She is an American politician from St. Louis, Missouri. Until 2006, she served as a representative for a part of St. Louis in the Missouri House of Representatives. She is a member of the Democratic Party.
Yaphett El-Amin grew up in St. Louis. She earned a degree in political science from the University of Arkansas, Pine Bluff. She also studied for a master's degree in public administration at Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville.

Getting Started in Politics
Yaphett El-Amin began her political journey in 1997. She became a Democratic Committeewoman for the 1st Ward. A committeewoman is a local party leader who helps organize and represent her community.
Serving as State Representative
In 2002, El-Amin ran for State Representative in Missouri's 57th District. A State Representative is someone who helps make laws for their state. She won the Democratic nomination and was elected without anyone running against her in the main election. She was re-elected in 2004, again without opposition.
Running for State Senate
In 2006, Yaphett El-Amin tried to become a member of the Missouri State Senate. The State Senate is another part of the state's law-making body. She came in second place in a close primary election. Her husband, Talibdan (TD) El-Amin, then ran for her old seat in the Missouri House of Representatives and won.
Helping the Community
After her time as a State Representative, Yaphett El-Amin continued to work for her community.
Leading MOKAN Construction
In 2008, El-Amin became the Executive Director of MOKAN Construction and Contractors Assistance Center. This is a non-profit group that helps businesses owned by minorities and women connect with the construction industry.
She also started the MOKAN Educational Institute. Since 2015, this institute has trained many people from minority groups and women. It helps them get jobs in construction through apprenticeship programs in the St. Louis area.
Founding Efficacy Consulting
El-Amin also started her own company in 2007 called Efficacy Consulting and Development. This company helps other organizations with diversity, which means making sure people from all backgrounds are included. It also works on real estate projects.
She helped the Missouri Housing and Development Commission (MHDC) in 2011. She worked to create programs that would include more minority-owned businesses. Her company, Efficacy, also helps build affordable housing. They created a program to help more minority developers and businesses in Missouri.
Building New Homes
In 2015, El-Amin worked with a non-profit group called RISE. Together, they built "The Village at Delmar Place." This project included 40 affordable townhomes and garden homes in St. Louis.
She then worked on other projects to help communities in St. Louis:
- Finney Place: This project included 40 single-family homes.
- Scott Manor Senior Homes: This facility has 42 homes for seniors. It also includes space for businesses and community meetings.
In 2018, El-Amin's company expanded to Illinois. They started renovating the historic Broadview Hotel in East St. Louis. This hotel will become "The New Broadview," with 110 senior apartments and commercial space.
Yaphett El-Amin's goal is to keep working with communities that need help. She wants to find solutions to problems and make neighborhoods better, one block at a time.
