Yarrunga is a small Aboriginal community in Western Australia. It is located about 50 kilometers (31 miles) northeast of Halls Creek. This community is part of the beautiful Kimberley region. It is also within the area managed by the Shire of Halls Creek.
History of Yarrunga
Yarrunga was started in the late 1980s. Its main purpose was to provide homes for older Aboriginal people. They wanted a peaceful place away from the main town of Halls Creek.
How Yarrunga is Governed
The Yarrunga community is managed by its own group called the Yarrunga Aboriginal Corporation. This group was officially formed on September 15, 1983. It operates under a special law for Aboriginal councils and associations. This law helps Aboriginal communities manage their own affairs.
