Yatala Pie Shop facts for kids
The Yatala Pie Shop is a very famous pie shop located in Yatala, a town in Queensland, Australia. It's known for its delicious pies! In 2009, during the Q150 celebrations (which marked 150 years of Queensland), the Yatala Pie Shop was named one of the top "Q150 Icons" of Queensland because it's such an important place. On an average day, this busy shop sells about 3,500 pies!
History of the Yatala Pie Shop
The Yatala Pie Shop first opened its doors in 1914. It was originally located right next to the old Pacific Highway. However, when the new Pacific Motorway was built, roadside shops were not allowed anymore. Because of this, the pie shop moved to a bigger, more modern building. This new location is just off exit 38 if you're driving north on the motorway.
In April 2017, the pie shop experienced some flooding. This happened after very heavy rain from Cyclone Debbie.
Why Yatala Pies Are Famous
The Yatala Pie Shop is often listed among the "best pie shops" in Australia. It even won an award in 2007 from Family Business Australia. It's also considered one of Queensland's top 15 most iconic places.
The Big Pie Landmark
Outside the shop, there's a giant pie on top of a pole! This "Big Pie" is listed as one of Australia's Big Things. These are large, fun sculptures found all over Australia that celebrate local attractions.
