Yaxun Bʼalam III (also known as 6-Tun-Bird-Jaguar) was an important ruler, or ajaw, of the ancient Maya city of Yaxchilan. He ruled for a long time, from 631 to 681.
Who Was Yaxun Bʼalam III?
Yaxun Bʼalam III's father was a ruler named Kʼinich Tatbu Skull III. We don't know his mother's name.
He married a noblewoman named Lady Pacal. She was the sister of another important person, Lady Xoc. Yaxun Bʼalam III and Lady Pacal had a son named Itzamnaaj Bʼalam II. Their son later became king after his father.
People generally believe that Yaxun Bʼalam was the third ruler with that name. The name "6-Tun" was added to his official title. This helped tell him apart from his grandson, Yaxun Bʼalam IV, who was also known as Bird Jaguar IV.
Yaxun Bʼalam III's Time as King
Yaxun Bʼalam III was the king of Yaxchilan for 50 years, from 631 to 681.
One interesting carving shows him playing the ballgame. This carving is on the eighth step of Temple 33 in the city of Tikal. The carving shows this event happened on August 27, 636.
Around 646 or 647, King Yaxun Bʼalam III captured a leader from another Maya city-state called Hix Witz. He recorded that the main city of Hix Witz was located at a place called Zapote Bobal at that time.
