Lady Pakal (also spelled Lady Pacal) was an important Maya queen in a city called Yaxchilan, located in what is now Mexico. Her name in the ancient Mayan language, Ix Pacal, means "shield."
She was a very old woman when she died in the year 705. People say she lived into her sixth k'atun, which is a Mayan time period of about 20 years. This means she was at least 98 years old!
Her Family and Royal Connections
Lady Pakal was the daughter of a woman named Lady Xibalba. She married the king, or ajaw, of Yaxchilan, whose name was Yaxun B'alam III.
Together, Lady Pakal and King Yaxun B'alam III had a son named Itzamnaaj B'alam II. He later became a powerful king himself. Lady Pakal's grandson was Yaxun B'alam IV, who ruled Yaxchilan from 752 to 768.
It is thought that Lady Xoc might have been Lady Pakal's sister. Lady Pakal's daughter-in-law was Lady Eveningstar, who came from the city of Calakmul. These family ties helped connect important Maya cities.
