Yelizaveta Yakovlevna Tarakhovskaya (1891–1968) was a talented Russian writer. She was a poet, wrote plays, translated books, and created many wonderful children's books.

Life and Works of Yelizaveta Tarakhovskaya

Yelizaveta Tarakhovskaya was born in Taganrog, Russia, on July 26, 1891. Her family included her sister, Sophia Parnok, who was also a poet. Her twin brother, Valentin Parnakh, helped start Soviet Russian jazz music.

Yelizaveta went to the Taganrog Girls Gymnasium. Later, she studied in Saint Petersburg. She started writing poems when she was a child.

Early Books for Young Readers

In 1925, Yelizaveta Tarakhovskaya published her first books. These were On How Chocolate Came to MosSelProm and Tit Will Fly. After that, she wrote many more books for children.

Some of her popular children's books include Metropolitan (1932) and The Moon and the Lazy Fellow (1933). She also wrote The Seagull (1965). This book was dedicated to Valentina Tereshkova. Valentina Tereshkova was the first woman to travel into space.

Poetry for Adults

Yelizaveta Tarakhovskaya also wrote poems for grown-ups. Two of her collections are The Violin Clef (1958) and The Bird (1965). Her poems are often thoughtful and full of humor. They often describe everyday things around us.

Translating Stories and Poems

Yelizaveta Tarakhovskaya was also a skilled translator. She translated many poems for children into Russian. These poems came from different Soviet and foreign authors. She translated works by poets like Julian Tuwim from Poland. She also translated poems by Kuddus Muhammadi from Uzbekistan. Other poets she translated include Mirvari Dilbazi from Azerbaijan and Eduardas Mieželaitis from Lithuania.

The Famous Play By the Pike's Wish

Today, Yelizaveta Tarakhovskaya is perhaps best known for her play. It is called By the Pike's Wish. This play was first performed in November 1936. It was staged by Sergey Obraztsov at the Moscow State Academic Puppet Show.

The play has been very popular and is still performed there today. Experts in theater consider By the Pike's Wish to be a very important puppet show. It was even made into a movie in 1938. The movie was directed by Aleksandr Rou.

Later Life and Legacy

Yelizaveta Tarakhovskaya passed away in Moscow on November 11, 1968. She was buried in the Novodevichy Cemetery. Her twin brother, Valentin, is also buried there.

In 2012, a special plaque was placed on their birth house in Taganrog. This plaque honors the Parnokh family.
