Where the Yellow-and-Black Triplefin Lives
This fish lives in rocky reef areas. It prefers depths of about 15 to 30 meters (which is about 50 to 100 feet) underwater. They like places where there are broken rocks to hide in and explore.
What the Yellow-and-Black Triplefin Looks Like
The yellow-and-black triplefin is quite small. It usually grows to be between 4 and 7 centimeters long. That's about the size of your finger!
When it's not breeding, its colors are a bit softer. Its head is a pale pinkish color. The rest of its body and tail are yellowish. It has a black stripe, like a mask, that goes across its eyes. This stripe continues down the center of its body, slowly changing to a darker yellow color.
Amazing Color Changes for Breeding
When it's time to breed, the yellow-and-black triplefin's colors become truly amazing! Its head and tail turn completely black. The rest of its body becomes a bright, vibrant yellow. This makes it look very striking in the water.
These fish are also very protective parents. Yellow-and-black triplefins guard their nests carefully. After the eggs are laid and hatched, their spectacular breeding colors quickly fade. They return to their usual non-breeding colors.
