Understanding Native Title
Native title is about the special rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. These rights are connected to their traditional lands and waters. The Miriuwung Gajerrong people are the traditional owners of the land where Yirrallelm is found.
The Ord Final Agreement
The Miriuwung Gajerrong people signed an important agreement called the Ord Final Agreement. This agreement helps them work together with the Western Australian State Government. It also includes businesses and developers. The goal is to benefit everyone in the East Kimberley region.
How Yirrallelm is Governed
Governance means how a community or group is managed and makes decisions. For the Miriuwung Gajerrong people, a group called Yawoorroong Miriuwung Gajerrong Yirrgeb Noong Dawang Aboriginal Corporation (MG Corp) helps with this.
Role of MG Corp
MG Corp acts on behalf of all Miriuwung Gajerrong native title holders. It makes sure that the promises made in the Ord Final Agreement are kept. This includes things about community living areas. MG Corp was officially started in 2006.
Even though only native title holders can be members, MG Corp helps all Miriuwung Gajerrong people. They assist with planning, managing, and using their traditional lands.
Planning for the Community's Future
Every town needs a plan for how it will grow and be organised. Yirrallelm has its own plan called "Yirrallelm Layout Plan No.1".
What is a Layout Plan?
This plan was created following a state policy for Aboriginal Settlements. The community members of Yirrallelm approved their Layout Plan No.1 on 16 November 2010. The Western Australian Planning Commission also approved it on 29 September 2010. This plan helps guide how the community's land will be used and developed in the future.
