The Young Brothers Chevrolet Garage is a very old building in Chinook, Montana. It's special because it's listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's an important historical site in the United States. For over 100 years, this building has been used for cars. It started as a place for horses and then became a spot for fixing and selling cars.

A Historic Montana Garage

The Young Brothers Chevrolet Garage was added to the National Register of Historic Places on August 16, 1994. This building is made of a material called stucco and has an asphalt roof. It is a great example of a building that has served drivers for a very long time.

What Was This Garage For?

Since 1912, this building has been a garage or an automotive business. It's rare to find a building in Montana that has been used for the same purpose for so long. At first, it might have been a stable for horses. But soon, it became a garage for cars. It served both people traveling on US 2 and local residents.

Its Changing Names

Over the years, this historic garage has been known by several different names:

  • AAA Garage
  • Taylor Motor Company
  • Tilleman Chevrolet
  • Precision Auto Body

In 1929, two brothers, Neil and Hollis Young, bought the business. They moved their car shop here from across the street. The Young brothers owned the local Chevrolet dealership. Within five years, they also started selling Pontiac and Oldsmobile cars. This gave people in Chinook many choices for General Motors vehicles.

Selling Gas and More

Like most small-town car dealerships, this garage also sold gasoline and other car fluids. It was mainly a place to buy Conoco gas. But it also sold Grizzly gas from Cut Bank and Silver gas from Great Falls. The garage continued to operate as a gas station into the 1970s.

In 1939, S. L. Taylor bought the business. It was then known as the Taylor Motor Company until 1977. The gas pumps were removed, and the car dealership closed in 1979. This happened when Mike Tilleman owned it. In the early 1980s, Wesley Bevis bought the building. He opened his own business, Precision Auto Body. This continued the long history of car service at this location.

Unique Building Style

The garage building itself is a great example of the Mission style of architecture. This style is not often seen in the Rocky Mountain or Great Plains areas. It has a beautiful curved top part called a parapet. It also has decorated columns called pilasters and horizontal bands for decoration. The smooth stucco outside shows off this style very well. Its modern look reflected the exciting progress of the early car era.
