Ysgol Gyfun Gymunedol Penweddig is a Welsh-language school located in Llanbadarn Fawr, near Aberystwyth, Wales. Its name means 'Penweddig Community Comprehensive School' in English. The school first opened in 1973. It was the very first Welsh-language secondary school in the Ceredigion area. The school is named after Penweddig, an old region in northern Ceredigion.
In 2024, there were 598 students attending the school. A report from 2017 showed that 69% of students spoke Welsh at home. All students were able to speak Welsh fluently. By 2024, about 60.4% of students spoke Welsh at home.
The school building is owned by a private company. This company then leases the building to the school. When the school first started in the mid-1970s, it was located on Ffordd Dewi in Aberystwyth. After talking with parents, staff, and students, the school moved. In October 2001, it moved to its current home on Llanbadarn Road. Mr Clive Williams is the current headteacher of the school.
School Life
Student Voice: The School Council
The school has a special group called the school council. This council is formed before the autumn half-term break. It meets regularly to talk about ways to make the school better. This includes ideas for physical changes or how the school is run.
The council has two students from each school year. One boy and one girl are chosen by their classmates. There are also two permanent members who represent the local youth service. These members are also students. A deputy headteacher helps guide the council's discussions.
