Ryu Gwansun (born December 16, 1902 – died September 28, 1920), also known as Yu Gwansun, was a brave Korean freedom fighter. She stood up against the Japanese rule over Korea. She is remembered as a hero for her strong spirit and her fight for her country's independence.

Early Life

Ryu Gwansun was born on December 16, 1902. She grew up in a small farming village in Korea. Her brother shared that she was very smart and taught herself how to read the Korean alphabet, Hangul. She was a lively and playful child. She loved to run and could quickly remember Bible verses. Her nephew, who lived in the same village, remembered her having big, bright black eyes. Her brother described her as tall, with a fair and round face.

When she was 12 years old, Ryu Gwansun went to the Ewha Girls' School in Seoul. There, she learned more about Christianity and continued her education.

Standing Up for Freedom

Ryu Gwansun joined the March 1st Movement. This was a big protest where many Koreans peacefully asked for their country's independence from Japanese rule. Even though her teachers told students not to join, Ryu and her friends from school took part.

She was briefly held in prison, and her school was closed because of the protests. After this, Ryu went back to her home province. With the help of her family and friends, she planned another peaceful protest for March 1st. The day before the event, Ryu lit a bonfire on a mountain. This was a signal to everyone that the demonstration would begin soon.

The next day, more than 2,000 people gathered in a marketplace for the protest. Sadly, during the demonstration, there was violence. Many people were hurt or lost their lives, including Ryu's parents. Ryu Gwansun was taken to prison again. She passed away while in prison when she was just 18 years old. After her death, her image became a powerful symbol for Korean people fighting for their rights and independence.
