Yuri Alexandrovich Bychkov (born September 1, 1931, in Lopasnya, Russia – died April 18, 2016, in Moscow) was a Russian art historian. An art historian is someone who studies and writes about art and its history. Yuri Bychkov was also a member of important groups for artists and theater professionals in Russia. From 1994 to 2004, he was the director of a museum dedicated to a famous writer in a place called Melikhovo.

His Life and Work

Early Life and Education

Yuri Bychkov was born in a town called Lopasnya, which is now known as Chekhov. He went to the Moscow Aviation Institute, where he studied. Even though the institute is about aviation, he became well-known for his work in art history.

Protecting History

Yuri Bychkov helped start a very important group called VOOPIK. This stands for the All-Russian Society for Historic Preservation and Cultural Organization. This group works to protect old buildings, historical places, and cultural sites across Russia. Bychkov played a key role in making sure these important parts of history were saved for future generations.

Leading a Museum

For ten years, from 1994 to 2004, Yuri Bychkov was the director of a writer's house museum in Melikhovo. This museum is dedicated to the famous Russian writer Anton Chekhov. As director, Bychkov helped manage the museum and share the writer's history and works with visitors.

Yuri Bychkov passed away in Moscow on April 18, 2016, when he was 84 years old.
