The Yurubí National Park (which is Parque nacional Yurubí in Spanish) is a special protected area in the north of Venezuela, a country in South America. It became a national park on March 18, 1960. Its main job is to protect the Yurubí River. This river is super important because it provides fresh drinking water for the city of San Felipe.
What is Yurubí National Park?
Yurubí National Park is located in the mountains of the Sierra de Aroa. It covers an area of about 236.7 square kilometers (about 91 square miles). The park is home to different types of forests, including cloud forests and low mountain forests. These forests are surrounded by farms and cultivated areas.
The park has small paths that people use. Most of these paths are used by a few visitors, researchers, or sometimes by people who hunt animals illegally. No one lives inside the park anymore. The people who used to live there moved out many years ago.
Animals and Plants of Yurubí
Even though not a lot of research has been done, scientists believe Yurubí National Park has many different kinds of animals and plants. This is because of where it is located. Many of these species might be found only in this area.
So far, researchers have found many types of animals in the park. This includes 68 kinds of birds that fly through the trees. There are also 64 different types of bats, which are important for the park's ecosystem. Other mammals found here include 13 types of carnivores (meat-eaters), 9 kinds of rodents, 5 marsupials (like opossums), and 2 types of primates.
