Yūtokutaishi Akiyama facts for kids

Yūtokutaishi Akiyama (秋山 祐徳太子, Akiyama Yūtokutaishi) (1935 – 3 April 2020) was a Japanese artist. He was known for his unique tin engravings and also worked as a photographer. Akiyama even ran for governor of Tokyo, bringing a fun, artistic style called pop art into his campaigns.

Akiyama was born in Tokyo in 1935 with the name Sukenori Akiyama. He studied engraving at Musashino Art School. After his studies, he worked as a designer for a company that made electrical products.

Becoming an Artist

Akiyama started showing his own artwork in 1965. His art often included tin engravings. These were special pictures made by cutting designs into tin.

In 1975 and 1979, Akiyama decided to run for Governor of Tokyo. He used his artistic ideas, especially pop art, in his campaigns. Pop art is a style that uses images from popular culture, like advertisements or comic books. This made his political campaigns very unusual and interesting.

Exhibitions and Teaching

Akiyama's art was shown in many places. One important show was called "Akiyama Yūtokutaishi no sekai-ten" in 1994. This exhibition took place at the Ikeda 20-Seiki Bijutsukan museum in Itō, Shizuoka.

From 1999 to 2003, Akiyama was a professor at Sapporo University. He taught students there, sharing his knowledge and artistic skills.

Other Projects

Akiyama was also part of an informal group called Raika Dōmei. He joined this group with other artists, Genpei Akasegawa and Yutaka Takanashi, from 1992 until about 2009.

He also appeared in a film called Yūheisha/Terorisuto, which was directed by Masao Adachi in 2007.

Today, some of Akiyama's artwork is kept in the Tokushima Modern Art Museum. This means his art is part of the museum's permanent collection for people to see for many years.

Yūtokutaishi Akiyama passed away on April 3, 2020.
