Zachary Parker is an educator and a politician from the United States. He currently serves as a member of the Council of the District of Columbia. He represents an area called Ward 5 and has been doing so since January 2023.
Early Life and Education
Zachary Parker was born in the city of Chicago. He went to Northwestern University and earned a bachelor's degree in Speech and Language Pathology. Later, he studied at Columbia University, where he received a master's degree in Education Policy and Leadership.
Career as an Educator and Politician
Before becoming a politician, Zachary Parker worked as a math teacher. He taught through a program called Teach for America, which helps place teachers in schools.
In 2018, Parker decided to run for public office. He won his first election for the State Board of Education, representing Ward 5. The State Board of Education helps make decisions about schools and learning. In 2021, he became the president of the State Board of Education.
Serving on the District of Columbia Council
In 2022, Zachary Parker ran for a seat on the Council of the District of Columbia. This council is like a local government for Washington, D.C. He won the election, beating six other people who were also running.
Parker took over the seat from Kenyan McDuffie. Mr. McDuffie had been elected to a different council position, known as an "At-Large" seat, which represents the entire city. As a council member, Parker helps make important decisions for the people living in Ward 5 and across Washington, D.C.
