About Zamani Saul
His Early Life and Schooling
Zamani Saul finished his Grade 12 at Umso High School in Colesberg. After school, he continued his studies at several universities. He earned a master's degree in Development Studies from the University of the Free State. He also received a Master of Laws degree and a Doctorate of Laws degree from the University of the Western Cape.
Currently, Mr. Saul is working towards another advanced degree, a Doctorate of Philosophy, through the University of South Africa. He is married to Tapsy Saul, and they have children. Their son finished high school in 2018.
His Journey in Politics
Zamani Saul has a long history in public service. From 2000 to 2008, he worked as the municipal manager for the Pixley ka Seme District Municipality. This role involved managing the local government in that area.
He became the Deputy Provincial Secretary of the ANC in the Northern Cape in 2004. In 2008, he was elected as the Provincial Secretary, a key leadership role within the party. He was re-elected for a second term in 2012.
On 12 May 2017, Zamani Saul was chosen as the Provincial Chairperson of the ANC in the Northern Cape. He was the only person nominated for the position after the previous Premier, Sylvia Lucas, decided not to run. Mr. Saul took over from John Block, who had stepped down in 2015.
Leading the Northern Cape
In the elections held on 8 May 2019, the ANC won enough votes to stay in charge of the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature. On 13 May 2019, Zamani Saul was chosen by his party to become the Premier. He officially started his role as Premier on 22 May 2019.
When he first became Premier, Mr. Saul promised to stop what he called "wastage" in the government. He believed that some spending was unnecessary. For example, he thought it was wasteful for the Premier to get fresh fruit every morning or for official cars to be replaced too often.
To show his commitment, he stopped Northern Cape ministers from getting new cars. Instead, he used that money to buy 63 new ambulances for the province. This decision helped improve healthcare services for people in the Northern Cape.
