Zamani Saul (born 7 March 1972) is a South African politician. He is currently the 5th Premier of the Northern Cape. This means he is the leader of the government in the Northern Cape province. He is also a member of the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature.
Since May 2017, he has been the leader of the African National Congress (ANC) in the Northern Cape. Before this, he held other important roles within the party.
About Zamani Saul
Zamani Saul finished his high school studies at Umso High School in Colesberg. He continued his education at different universities. He earned a master's degree in Development Studies from the University of the Free State. He also received a Master of Laws degree from the University of the Western Cape.
Later, he earned a Doctorate of Laws degree from the same university. This is a very high level of education in law. He is still studying for another doctorate degree from the University of South Africa. Zamani Saul is married to Tapsy Saul, and they have children. Their son finished high school in 2018.
His Journey in Politics
Zamani Saul has a long history in public service. From 2000 to 2008, he worked as a manager for the Pixley ka Seme District Municipality. A municipal manager helps run the local government.
He also held important positions within the African National Congress (ANC). From 2004 to 2008, he was the Deputy Provincial Secretary. Then, in 2008, he became the Provincial Secretary. He was re-elected for this role in 2012.
On 12 May 2017, Zamani Saul became the Provincial Chairperson of the ANC in the Northern Cape. He was the only person nominated for the job. He took over from John Block.
In the elections on 8 May 2019, the ANC won most of the votes in the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature. This meant they would form the government. On 13 May 2019, Zamani Saul was chosen to be the Premier. He officially started his job on 22 May 2019.
As Premier, he quickly made changes to save money. He said it was wrong for the government to waste money. For example, he stopped the practice of giving the Premier fresh fruit every morning. He also changed the rules for official cars. Instead of replacing the Premier's car often, he decided to use the money to buy 63 new ambulances for the province. This showed his commitment to using public funds wisely.
