Zbigniew Oleśnicki (born December 5, 1389 – died April 1, 1455) was a very important Polish leader. He was a high-ranking Roman Catholic church official. He was also a powerful statesman and diplomat for Poland.

He served as the Bishop of Kraków from 1423 until his death. He helped manage the country's most important matters. First, he was a royal secretary for King Władysław II Jagiełło. Later, he was like a temporary ruler while King Władysław III was too young to rule. In 1439, he became the first Polish person to be named a cardinal.

Early Life and Royal Service

Zbigniew Oleśnicki was born in Sienno, Poland. His father, Jan Oleśnicki, was a knight. He was sent by King Władysław Jagiełło to help defend the city of Vilnius. This was during a time of conflict in Lithuania.

At age 20, Zbigniew became a secretary to King Władysław Jagiełło. He even fought alongside the king in the famous battle of Grunwald in 1410. Because the king liked him, Zbigniew became very involved in running the country.

Becoming a Bishop and Cardinal

Zbigniew Oleśnicki used his influence to oppose the Hussites. These were a religious group that had gained some favor with the king. On July 9, 1423, he was chosen to be the Bishop of Kraków.

In 1433, the king sent him as a representative to the council of Basle. This was an important meeting of church leaders. Zbigniew tried to get along with everyone there.

On December 18, 1439, he was made a cardinal by Pope Eugene IV. This was a very high honor in the Catholic Church. As a cardinal, his power in Poland was second only to the king. He often managed state affairs when King Casimir IV was away in Lithuania.

Political Influence and Vision

Zbigniew Oleśnicki was one of the two most important Polish leaders of his time. He had big ideas for Poland's future. He wanted to fully unite Lithuania with Poland. He also hoped to take control of Silesia from the Kingdom of Bohemia.

He strongly believed in forming an alliance with Hungary. This alliance would fight against the Ottoman Turks. His goal was to expand Poland's borders all the way to the Black Sea. He even supported King Władysław III becoming the King of Hungary. However, these plans ended when King Władysław died in the Battle of Varna.

Support for Education and Culture

Zbigniew Oleśnicki was a very educated man. He worked hard to support arts and learning. The University of Krakow became very strong during his time as bishop. This was largely thanks to his efforts.

The famous historian Jan Długosz was his personal secretary. To stop the spread of Hussitism, he invited a preacher named Giovanni da Capistrano and the Minorites religious order to Kraków. Oleśnicki was a strong supporter of Catholic teachings. He worked to ensure that Polish laws reflected the rules of the church.
