Zingerman's is a group of food businesses located in Ann Arbor, Michigan. It's known for its delicious gourmet (fancy food) items. The very first business, and still the most famous, is Zingerman's Delicatessen.
From that first deli, Zingerman's has grown a lot! It now includes nine different businesses in Ann Arbor. Together, these businesses employ over 500 people. The original founders, Paul Saginaw and Ari Weinzweig, share ownership with the people who manage each new business. Even though each business works a bit differently, they all follow the same high standards and company values.
How Zingerman's Started
Zingerman's Delicatessen was opened in 1982. It was started by Paul Saginaw and Ari Weinzweig. They began by serving traditional Jewish deli foods and sandwiches. These were not kosher, which means they didn't follow all Jewish dietary laws.
The deli was almost named "Greenberg's Delicatessen." This was after a customer at another market where Paul Saginaw used to work. But another business already had that name, so they chose Zingerman's instead.
Growing the Business
In the early 1990s, Paul and Ari made a plan for their company's future. They wanted to have many different businesses.
As Zingerman's became more popular, it started offering even more. They began selling imported gourmet foods from around the world. They also started making their own bread at Zingerman's Bakehouse. Plus, they created their own dairy products at Zingerman's Creamery.
They opened a second restaurant called Zingerman's Roadhouse. This restaurant focuses on different types of American food from various regions. Today, the company owns several well-known brands. These include Zingerman's Mail Order, Zingerman's Coffee Company, Zingerman's Training, Inc., Zingerman's Candy, and Zingerman's Catering. Zingerman's also offers food clubs by mail and even special cooking trips!
Helping Other Businesses
Zingerman's also helped another bakery get started. In 1997, they gave Avalon International Breads a big discount on an old oven. They also shared their original business plan to help Ann Perrault and Jackie Victor open their bakery in Detroit.
