Zingerman's is a group of food businesses located in Ann Arbor, Michigan. It's also known as Zingerman's Community of Businesses. The very first business they started, and still their main one, is Zingerman's Delicatessen.
From that first deli, Zingerman's has grown a lot. Today, they have nine different businesses in Ann Arbor. More than 500 people work for them! The original founders, Paul Saginaw and Ari Weinzweig, share ownership with the managers who started each new business. Even though each business runs a bit differently, they all follow the same high standards and company values.
History of Zingerman's
How It All Began
Zingerman's Delicatessen was started in 1982 by Paul Saginaw and Ari Weinzweig. They began by serving traditional deli foods and sandwiches. These were similar to dishes from Eastern European Jewish cooking.
The deli was almost named "Greenberg's Delicatessen." This name came from a regular customer at Monahan's Fish Market. Paul Saginaw used to be a partner there. However, another business already had that name, so they chose Zingerman's instead.
Growing the Business
In the early 1990s, the founders made a plan for their company. They hoped to have 15 separate businesses by 2009. Their goal was to earn $20 million in sales.
In 1997, Paul Saginaw bought out his partner's share of the company. This allowed his partner to focus on his own seafood market. As Zingerman's grew, they started offering more special foods from around the world. They even began making their own bread at Zingerman's Bakehouse. They also created dairy products at Zingerman's Creamery.
They opened a second restaurant called Zingerman's Roadhouse. This restaurant focuses on different kinds of American food from various regions. Over time, the company added many more businesses. These include Zingerman's Mail Order, Zingerman's Coffee Company, and Zingerman's Candy. They also have Zingerman's Training, Inc., which helps other businesses learn their methods. Zingerman's Catering handles food for events.
Zingerman's also helped another bakery, Avalon International Breads, get started in 1997. They gave them a big discount on an old oven and shared their original business plan.
