Zora Petrović (born May 17, 1894, in Dobrica – died May 25, 1962, in Belgrade) was a famous Serbian painter. You can see her amazing artworks in the Museum of Contemporary Art in Belgrade and the Pavle Beljanski Memorial Collection in Novi Sad. She was known for her strong and unique painting style.

About Zora Petrović

Zora Petrović started her journey in art by attending high school in Pančevo from 1907 to 1909. In 1912, she joined the Belgrade Arts and Crafts School. There, she learned from talented teachers like Milan Milovanović, Đorđe Jovanović, and Marko Murat.

Her Art Education

Zora continued her art studies in Budapest, learning painting from Professor Lajos Deák Ébner. She also took classes with professors Pál Szinyei Merse and Istvan Reti at the Nagybanya artists' colony. This colony was very important for art in Hungary and Romania. From 1915 to 1919, she was a student at the Hungarian Royal Drawing School and Art Teachers' College.

In 1919, Zora returned to Belgrade. She attended the Arts and Crafts Painting School, where Ljubomir Ivanović was her teacher.

Zora's Teaching Career

After finishing her studies, Zora Petrović became a teacher. She taught at a college in Belgrade. From 1921 to 1944, she taught at the Second Women's Gymnasium "Queen Natalia." She also spent a year in Paris (1925-1926), where she worked in the studio of André Lhote.

Later, from 1942 to 1944, she worked as a drawing teacher at the Mladen Josić School of Painting. In 1952, she got a job at the Academy of Fine Arts in Belgrade. She worked there for the rest of her life, sharing her knowledge with new artists.

Her Passion for Painting

Painting was Zora Petrović's greatest love. She never married or had her own family. Instead, she spent all her free time creating art. Through her oil and watercolor paintings, she wanted to show her love for life. She especially loved painting poor people and peasant women from different parts of Serbia.

Zora knew that not everyone might understand her art. But she continued to paint exactly what her heart told her to. She had her own special style, which was a strong and modern way of showing real life. She used wide, bold brushstrokes and bright colors. Her works were often grand and powerful. Zora Petrović always kept her unique artistic style, making her stand out from other artists.
