Álvaro de Navia-Osorio y Vigil (born in 1684 in Santa Maria de Vega, Spain; died in 1732 near Oran, North Africa) was an important Spanish diplomat, general, and author. He was also the 3rd Marquis of Santa Cruz de Marcenado and Viscount of Puerto. At the time of his death, he was the governor of Oran, a Spanish territory in North Africa. He was killed in battle while defending Oran from an attack by Ottoman forces.

His Writings on Military Strategy

Between 1726 and 1730, Álvaro de Navia-Osorio wrote a major work called Military Reflections. This work was published in seven volumes in cities like Turin and Paris.

Understanding Rebellions

One special part of his Military Reflections focused on how to prevent rebellions and how to deal with them if they happened. A rebellion is when a group of people rise up against the government or ruling power.

Early Thinker on Conflict

Santa Cruz de Marcenado was likely one of the first authors to study this topic in a very organized way. His ideas helped shape how people thought about preventing and stopping internal conflicts.
