Évariste Lévi-Provençal (born January 4, 1894 – died March 27, 1956) was a French historian who studied the Middle Ages, especially the history of Islam and Arab cultures. He was known for his work on the history of Muslim Spain.
Évariste Lévi-Provençal was born in Constantine, Algeria as Makhlóuf Evariste Levi. His family was Jewish from North Africa. When he was 19, he changed his name to Évariste Lévi-Provençal. He went to school in Constantine. During World War I, he served in the French army and was injured in 1917.
After the war, he joined the Institut des Hautes Etudes Marocaines. He later worked at the University of Algiers starting in 1926. In 1945, he moved to the Sorbonne.
Lévi-Provençal was very important for the study of Islam in France. He founded and directed the Institute of Islamic Studies in Algiers. He focused on the history of al-Andalus, which was the part of Spain ruled by Muslims in the Middle Ages. He worked on editing and translating old Arabic writings about Spain's medieval history. He often worked with a Spanish expert named Emilio García Gómez.
He admired the scholarship of Muslims. He also wrote about how Muslims lived and their institutions. He was against colonialism.
