Östen Mäkitalo (born August 27, 1938 – died June 16, 2011) was a Swedish electrical engineer. He is known as one of the most important people who helped create modern mobile phones.

Working with another engineer, Laila Ohlgren, he helped develop the first mobile phone system called NMT (Nordic Mobile Telephone). They were key figures in creating a common standard for mobile phones in Nordic countries. Later, they also helped develop GSM, which became a worldwide standard for mobile communication. Many people see them as the inventors of the cellular phone and mobile phone technology.

Early Life and Education

Östen Mäkitalo was born in Koutojärvi, Övertorneå Municipality, Sweden. He earned a master's degree in electrical engineering from the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Sweden. While studying, he also worked as a teaching assistant and lecturer in physics at KTH.

In 1961, he started his career at Televerket, which was the Swedish Telecommunications Administration. This company later became part of TeliaSonera. At Televerket, he worked on improving sound quality for telecommunications. In the early 1970s, he began his PhD studies at KTH, focusing on Tele Transmission theory. He also became a visiting professor at KTH in 2005. He was an elected member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences.

Developing Mobile Technology

Mäkitalo played a big part in creating the very first generation of mobile phone systems, known as 1G. He was also a key person in developing GSM, which is the technology many of our phones still use today.

He was part of the team that created the world's first country-wide paging system. This system allowed people to send messages across a whole country. He also helped develop the technology for digital TV sound and digital TV that you can watch on regular antennas. Mäkitalo held about 20 patents. One of his patents from 1971 was for a cellular system that allowed phones to work in different areas (called roaming) and switch between cell towers (called handover).

Awards and Recognition

Östen Mäkitalo received many awards and honors for his important work. Some of these include:

• 1987 - He won the IVA's gold medal for his work in mobile phone technology.
• 1991 - He received an honorary doctorate from Chalmers University of Technology.
• 1994 - The Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) gave him the KTH Grand Prize for his pioneering research in radio technology.
• 2001 - He was awarded H. M. The King's Medal by the King of Sweden for his major contributions to mobile phone technology.
