Đặng Phong (1937–2010) was a famous Vietnamese historian who studied economics. He was born in Hà Tây Province and became known for his deep knowledge of Vietnam's economic past. Many people called him "a living dictionary of Vietnam's economy."

Early Life and Education

Đặng Phong was born on November 4, 1937, in Hà Tây Province. He loved learning and studied history at Hanoi University, graduating in 1960. Later, in 1964, he also earned a degree from the Planning Faculty at National Economics University.

A Career in Economic History

After finishing his studies, Đặng Phong began working as an economist at the Vietnam Institute of Economics in 1961. He stayed there until 2000, focusing on the history of Vietnam's economy.

He also had other important roles:

  • He was the Vice Editor-in-chief for a journal called Tạp chí Thị trường & Giá cả (Markets and Prices Review) from 1983 to 1995.
  • He worked with the French National Centre for Scientific Research.
  • He was the Chairman of the Euro Economic Subcommittee – Viet III in Amsterdam in 1997.
  • He was a consultant for the Cuban Academy of Sciences.

In 1988, he won a scholarship to study in France, where he spent time at Institut Agricole Méditerranéen in Montpellier.

Studying Vietnam's Economy

Đặng Phong was very dedicated to his research. For one of his books, Kinh tế thời nguyên thủy ở Việt Nam, his wife even sold empty milk cans to help him get supplies like champagne and chocolate. He would then sell these items in South Vietnam to support his family.

After Vietnam became one united country in 1975, Đặng Phong used old government records from South Vietnam for his research. These records had detailed plans for developing farming, factories, and education. He believed these could help Vietnam plan its future after the war.

His book Lịch sử kinh tế Việt Nam was published in 2000. Throughout his life, Đặng Phong wrote many books and articles about Vietnam's economic history. He focused on different periods, including:

In his 2008 book, Tư duy Kinh tế Việt Nam, Đặng Phong explored how Vietnam's economic ideas changed between 1975 and 1989. He included important documents from the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam. He believed that "economic mindset decides economic policies," meaning how people think about the economy shapes how it runs. He also said that finding enough research materials was a big challenge.

Many people admired Đặng Phong's work. Trần Phương said he had a "serious scientific manner" and worked hard to find the true story behind historical events. Professor Nguyễn Thị Hiền noted that Đặng Phong had "a rich literary mind and a very sharp synthesis ability."

Researching History and Teaching

In 2010, Đặng Phong's book Chuyện Thăng Long – Hà Nội qua một đường phố was published. This book explored Lê Duẩn street in Hanoi and was inspired by a French historian's book about Hanoi. The book was meant to celebrate the Millennial Anniversary of Hanoi.

Besides writing, Đặng Phong also taught. He was a teacher at Đại học Kinh doanh và Công nghệ Hà Nội (Hanoi University of Business and Technology). He also gave guest lectures at many universities around the world, including:

  • University of Aix-en-Provence (2007)
  • University of Cambridge (2005)
  • University of Macquarie, Sydney (1996, 2000)
  • The Australian National University (1994)
  • University of Irvine California (1994)

Even though Vietnamese media sometimes called him "professor," Đặng Phong clarified in 2017 that he had never officially been given that title.

Family and Legacy

Đặng Phong's brother is Đặng Vũ, and his daughter is Đặng Lê Chi.

Đặng Phong passed away on August 20, 2010, after an illness. After his death, his book Chuyện Thăng Long – Hà Nội qua một đường phố was launched to honor him. Before he died, he had hoped to write a series of books about Vietnam's economic history with other historians.

One year after his death, several organizations held a talk show to remember Đặng Phong. They highlighted his important contributions to the study of economic history and how his work continues to inspire younger researchers.
