Early Career and Real Madrid
Álvaro Mejía started his football journey at Las Rozas CF. In 1998, he joined Real Madrid, one of the biggest football clubs in the world. He moved up through their youth teams.
He played for Real Madrid's third team in the 2001–02 season. Soon after, he joined their reserve team, Real Madrid B. He then moved to the main Real Madrid squad for the 2003–04 season.
Making His Debut
Álvaro Mejía made his first appearance in La Liga, Spain's top football league, on January 24, 2004. This was in a home game where Real Madrid won 2–1 against Villarreal CF. He also played in the UEFA Champions League, a major European club competition, on March 3, 2004. He played the whole game in a 1–0 win against FC Bayern Munich. In May 2004, he signed a new contract with Real Madrid until 2010. He was used in different defensive roles during his time there.
Later Years at Real Madrid
In the 2004–05 season, Mejía played in eight games for Real Madrid. Over the next two seasons, he played in 26 league games. He scored his only goal for Real Madrid on October 29, 2005. This happened in a 2–0 win against Real Betis, just one minute after he came onto the field as a substitute.
Moving to Other Teams
In July 2007, Mejía joined Real Murcia CF, a team that had just been promoted to the top league. He scored in his first league game for them, helping Murcia win 2–1 against Real Zaragoza. He played regularly during the 2007–08 season, but the team was relegated, meaning they dropped down to a lower league.
After Murcia dropped another league in 2010, Mejía moved to France. He signed a one-year contract with AC Arles-Avignon, a team that had just been promoted to Ligue 1, France's top league. In January 2011, he moved again, this time to Turkey. He joined Konyaspor, a club in the Süper Lig, Turkey's top football league.
On July 13, 2012, Mejía agreed to a one-year deal with UD Almería in Spain's Segunda División (second division). After playing one season in Greece with Ergotelis FC, he joined Al Shahaniya SC in Qatar in June 2014. This team had just been promoted to the Qatar Stars League.
