Ángel Galarza was a Spanish lawyer, journalist, and politician. He was born in 1892 and passed away in 1966. He served as the Minister of Interior in Spain from 1936 to 1937. After the Spanish Civil War, he moved to Mexico. Later, in 1946, he made his home in Paris, France.
Early Life and Education
Ángel Galarza was born in Madrid, Spain, on November 4, 1892. His father, Ángel Galarza Vidal, was also an engineer and politician.
Ángel Galarza studied law at the University of Madrid. He earned his law degree in 1919. He also completed his PhD in 1921.
Political Career
In June 1919, Galarza became a member of the Madrid Socialist Association. This group was connected to the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party. In 1920, he began working for newspapers like El Sol and La Voz.
Galarza also joined a Freemason group in Madrid. He was arrested in 1921 for opposing the government. This was during the time of the dictator Miguel Primo de Rivera. While in prison, he met other important figures. With them, he helped start the Radical Socialist Republican Party in 1929.
He was arrested again in December 1930 for supporting the idea of a republic. He was released in April 1931. In June 1931, he was elected as a deputy, representing the Zamora province. This was for the Radical Socialist Republican Party.
When a temporary government was formed during the Second Spanish Republic, Galarza took on important roles. He became a prosecutor for the Supreme Court. Then, he became the director general of security. Later, he was named undersecretary of the minister of communications. He held this position from December 1931 to January 1933. During this time, he started two newspapers in Zamora, called La Mañana and La Tarde.
In February 1932, he left the Radical Socialist Republican Party. He then joined the Spanish Socialist Workers Party in 1933. In February 1936, he was again elected as a deputy for Zamora.
During the Spanish Civil War, Francisco Largo Caballero formed a new government. This happened on September 4, 1936. Galarza was chosen to be the Minister of Interior. His time as minister ended in May 1937. In October 1937, he became a member of the Court of Civil Responsibilities. He served there until February 1938.
Later Life and Passing
After the Spanish Civil War ended, Galarza moved to Mexico. In 1946, he was no longer a member of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party. That same year, he moved to France. Ángel Galarza passed away in Paris on July 25, 1966.
In 2008, his membership to the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party was restored. This happened at a party meeting in July 2008.
