Supreme Court of Spain facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Supreme Court (called Tribunal Supremo, or TS, in Spanish) is the most important court in Spain. Think of it as the highest judge in the country. It makes sure laws are followed fairly.

What is the Supreme Court?

The Supreme Court is at the very top of the court system in Spain. It helps make sure that justice is served for everyone. Its decisions are final and help guide all other courts in the country.

What Does the Supreme Court Do?

The Supreme Court handles very important cases. For example, it looks at cases involving high-ranking government officials. This means people like ministers or top politicians. It also decides if political parties can be allowed to exist or if they should be made illegal.

Checking the Laws

The Court has a special power called "judicial review." This means it can check if decisions made by lower courts or government actions follow the law correctly. It makes sure everything is fair and legal. However, there's one special type of law it doesn't check: laws about the country's main rules, called the Constitution. Those are checked by a different court, the Constitutional Court.

The Supreme Court helps keep the legal system strong. It makes sure that everyone, even powerful people, must follow the rules. This helps keep Spain a fair and just country for all its citizens.
