Ángel Lizcano Monedero y Esteban (born November 24, 1846 – died July 31, 1929) was a Spanish painter and illustrator. He was known for painting scenes from everyday life, which is called Costumbrista art. He also painted historical events.

Biography

Ángel Lizcano was born in Alcázar de San Juan, a town in Spain. When he was seven years old, his family moved to Madrid to open a bookstore.

At the age of fourteen, Ángel began studying art. He went to the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, a famous art school. He finished his studies with high honors. To learn even more, he spent time at the Museo del Prado. There, he copied paintings by the Old Masters, who were very famous artists from the past.

In 1869, Ángel received money from a kind person named Manuel Antonio, Marqués de Bedmar. This money helped him continue his art studies in Italy. After his time in Italy, he traveled around Spain. He also showed his art in the National Exposition of Fine Arts. At one of these shows, King Amedeo I bought one of his paintings! Ángel won four medals at different art shows between 1876 and 1887. For many years, he worked as an artist who traveled from place to place.

Ángel Lizcano also became well-known as an illustrator and engraver. He created more than 800 images for many different magazines, books, and posters. One of his favorite magazines to work for was La Ilustración Española y Americana. He also drew pictures for famous books like the Episodios Nacionales by Benito Pérez Galdós. He illustrated plays by writers like Vital Aza and Tomás Luceño. He even illustrated classic Spanish stories called sainetes by Ramón de la Cruz. Some of his artworks were later used for postcards by the French photographer, Jean Laurent.

When he was fifty years old, Ángel faced some health challenges after his wife passed away. Even so, he kept painting and was named a Professor of drawing at the Círculo de Bellas Artes. Later, it became harder for him to paint his best work. He started making quick paintings of bullfights and other popular scenes to earn money. When his health made it almost impossible for him to paint, the Círculo de Bellas Artes decided to give him a yearly payment to help him. In 1929, he needed to go to a special hospital in Leganés, where he passed away.

His hometown held big art shows of his work in 1967 and 1996.
