History of the Academy
How the Academy Started
The Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando was officially created in 1752. This happened through a special order from the king, called a royal decree. It was set up to teach and promote fine arts like painting, sculpture, and architecture.
A Royal Home for Art
About 20 years after it started, a king named Charles III of Spain bought a grand building for the academy. This king was known for supporting new ideas and learning. The building was originally designed by José Benito de Churriguera for a family called Goyeneche.
King Charles III wanted the building to look more modern. He asked an architect named Diego de Villanueva to change it. Villanueva updated the building from an older, fancy style called Baroque to a newer, simpler style called Neoclassical. This made it perfect for an art academy.
The academy is also the main place for the Madrid Academy of Art.
