Her Life Story

New discoveries show that Ángela de Azevedo was born around 1665. Her birthplace was Paredes da Beira, Portugal. Her father, Tomé de Azevedo, was the governor of the Castle Fortress of Almeida. Her mother was Maria de Almeida.

Ángela grew up in the beautiful Azevedo family home. This large house, called a Manor house, had been in her family for hundreds of years. On November 1, 1693, she married Francisco de Ansiâes de Figueiredo there.

After marrying, she moved with her husband to Soutelo do Douro. She lived most of her life there and passed away before 1723. Ángela and her husband did not have any children.

Ángela was very smart and could speak three languages. She knew Portuguese, Spanish, and Latin. Her sister, Luísa, who later inherited the family home, also spoke these languages.

What Did She Write?

Ángela de Azevedo wrote all her plays in Spanish. One of her plays, "El muerto disimulado" (which means Presumed Dead), is very famous. In this play, the main character, Jacinta, is a strong woman. She takes charge of the story and doesn't act like women usually did back then. This shows Ángela's ideas about women being powerful.

Ángela de Azevedo was one of only six known female playwrights in 17th-century Spain. This makes her work even more special.

She wrote several plays, and three of them are still around today:

  • El muerto disimulado (The Feigned Death)
  • La Margarita del Tajo que dió nombre a Santarem (Margarita of Tajo Who Gave Her Name to Santarem)
  • Dicha y desdicha del juego y devoción de la Virgen (Bliss and Misfortune in the Game and Devotion to the Virgin)

All three plays are written in Spanish. They are also set in Portugal, her home country. "El muerto disimulado" is a story about everyday life. The other two plays are about religious topics. People believe her plays might have even been performed in the royal palace!
