Ângelo César Cardoso de Sousa (born February 2, 1938 – died March 29, 2011) was a famous Portuguese artist. He was a painter, sculptor, and draftsman. He also taught art. Ângelo de Sousa was known for always trying new ways to create art. He loved to study how light and color worked together. He also explored a style called minimalism, which uses very simple shapes and colors.
Early Life and Art School
Ângelo de Sousa was born in 1938 in a city called Lourenço Marques, which is now Maputo. When he was 17, in 1955, he moved to Porto, Portugal. There, he joined the School of Fine Arts.
He was a brilliant student. He earned the highest possible grade, 20, for his painting degree. Because he was so good, he became part of a special group. This group was called "Os Quatro Vintes," which means "The Four Twenties" in Portuguese. He was in this group with three other talented artists: Armando Alves, Jorge Pinheiro, and José Rodrigues.
A Teacher and Artist
Ângelo de Sousa lived and worked in Porto for most of his life. He started teaching at the School of Fine Arts in 1962. This school is now part of the University of Porto. He taught there until 2000, when he retired as a professor.
Even before he started teaching, Ângelo de Sousa had his first art show in 1959. After that, his artworks were shown in many places around the world.
Famous Awards
Ângelo de Sousa received important awards for his art. In 1975, he won the International Prize at the 13th São Paulo Art Biennial. This is a very important art event. Later, in 2007, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation gave him the Gulbenkian Prize. This is one of the biggest awards for art in Portugal.
Art in Books
Besides his paintings and sculptures, Ângelo de Sousa also created drawings for books. His drawings can be found in books by famous writers. Some of these writers include Eugénio de Andrade, Maria Alzira Seixo, Mário Cláudio, and Fiama Hasse Pais Brandão.
Ângelo de Sousa passed away at his home in 2011. He was 73 years old.
